“We concluded that organic agriculture is not just growing crops by avoiding synthetic materials or focusing mainly on crops, however, it is about building ecosystem with healthy attitudes

Building Ecosystem

ecosystem by famorganic

FAMOGROW is our concept to build productive ecosystem in organic agriculture environment. This concept changes our mindset on growing organic which is totally different with non-organic mindset or chemical mindset. Doing organic is about organic mindset.

FAMOGROW Concept

FAMOGROW concept is to build ecosystem to grow healthy crops. The inspiration is forest system. We maintain the existence of edible crops, weeds, trees, pest and predators as well as living creatures in soils. We let pest living together with crops, eating leaves. With FAMOGROW management system, there is only minimum damage. And pest life cycle keep changing according to the season (rain-transition-dry-transition). Thus, crops minimum damage are also kept changing along the year.

In doing that, we do composting the soils, crops rotation, soils rotation, companion and bio-diversification.

Compost for Soils

This is the most important factor. We compost the soils once to grow crops until harvesting time. Additional compost may be applied for medium-aged crops. Composting the soils will trigger the ecosystem below soils to provide healthy nutrition to crops.

SOILS ROTATION

Harvest everyday means we have to transplant everyday.  Just harvested bed should be able to transplant new crops with healthy and fresh soils from low layer of soils.

CROPS ROTATION

It is important to maintain soils healthiness and to manage pest population. Crops rotation is solving this issue.

COMPANION

This is about crops diversification or polyculture crops to build ecosystem as well as to manage pest population.

BIO-DIVERSIFICATION

Bio-diversification completes the integral diversification. Weeds and trees are places for predator to live. Variation of crops, weeds, and trees make up a good ecosystem.

COMPETENCES

Organic competence is the basic requirement. According to International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), the definition of organic agriculture is:

Organic Agriculture is a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems, and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic Agriculture combines tradition, innovation, and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and good quality of life for all involved.

IFOAM General Assembly 2008

Avoiding synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are not organic definition. It is only one of the organic characteristic. Lack of organic understanding may mislead the organic process.

There are organic rules and organic principles. Organic rules are country specific, while organic principles are universal. FAMOGROW is using principles.

ETHICS

Doing organic focusing on crops production may use all kinds of means. Ethics will keep the organic process on track based on sciences and principles. With high ethics, we can build ecosystem in an easy way with no burden, no high pressure.

Competences and ethics are a tight combination to run a true organic agriculture. We can’t have superior competences but lack of ethics, or high ethical but lack of competences. Trusted organic should have both.

Organic Lifestyle is not just consuming organic food. It is about healthy attitude. health of physic, health of mental spiritual, health of social and health of ecology.
