People also urge to live in a healthy environment. People need an organic environment.

The Journey

PT. FAMILI EKOKULTURA or FAM Organic is an eco socio culture based company who dedicates for the healthy attitude. Continue reading on how we evolve. .

FAM Organic was founded in 2009 by green couple Soeparwan Soeleman and Donor Rahayu. The inspiration was derived from the desire to live in a healthy lifestyle at all aspects. It is including but not limited to physical health, mental, social, ecology, financial, knowledge, and vision. As both of them did not have any agriculture background, they started by exploring the knowledge of organic in depth from credible sources such as the research journal of universities, leading organic institutions, research centers etc. Both of them always have intensive discussion, especially at the first years. They realize that organic is the discipline they are looking for. Since the local references of organic was very limited, they dedicated their time to study, practice and observe including community, industry, and market. IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements) is the main source of reference. They  attended APO National Workshop on Organic Product Certification delivered by IFOAM in 2013. In fact, the discipline of organic agriculture is including but not limited to the environment discipline, a healthy  ecosystem development. .

The embryo was a 3,500 square meter farm located in Karyawangi Village of Parongpong, West Bandung District, West Java Province, Indonesia. The location is nearby Tangkuban Perahu Mount and Burangrang Mount at an altitude of  1,200 meter above sea level. The steps of organic processes were executed directly by founders to ensure what they learnt was understood and executable before transferring the knowledge to the workers. This farm is named FAM Organic Parongpong. With their own paradigm of organic farming, the operation is similar with manufacturing industry with daily harvest and distribution. The integration of rotation and companion resulted in healthy soil environment and put the needs of organic pesticides at the last resort. In many cases, we never use it!

urban farming

In 2010, the founders set up organic edible garden at their house to fulfill the vegetables requirements for the family, reducing dependency of vegetables supply from their farm.  The edible garden was named Halaman Organik. This is one kind of edible garden with new concept of growing at home such as Halaman Organik Concept and Healthy House Concept. Halaman Organik is still in operation until know. A number of coverage had been made by electronic media and printing media as well as visit by community and individual.

It is imperative that people can start gardening easily. With our innovative concepts, our experiences in setting up Halaman Organik and our confident level, we took the liberty to hold Halaman Organik workshop for public. The first workshop was held in October 2010. We hold the workshop every month for public as well as for group workshop until now. The content of workshop is kept updated to meet today challenges.

Understand that workshop participants need to buy some gardening supplies and tools after the workshop, this brought up the idea to set up gardening shop. The purpose of the shop was then expanded as an integrated shop for healthy people and healthy environment. Other than supplies and tools, we provide the edible garden showcase, consultation, eco souvenirs and healthy food such as salad and green smoothie. The shop is also available for online order and delivery across the country. Click HERE to visit our shop.

Being a good corporate citizen, we  follow the government regulation in running a company. In 2013, we officially and legally established a legal entity named PT. FAMILI EKOKULTURA. This included all the licenses required to run a company. Head Office is at Jl, Cilandak No.8 Sarijadi-Setra Murni Atas, Bandung, the same location with FAM Organic Home.

In 2013, FAM Organic was officially accepted as the member of IFOAM, International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements based in Germany. IFOAM is one of the biggest organic organization in the world who strong influences for the development of organic. Later, the registrant’s name was changed to PT. FAMILI EKOKULTURA. In 2014, we become the member of AOI, Aliansi Organis Indonesia based in Bogor, the biggest organic organization in Indonesia.

As part of intellectual property protection, we have registered our brand, FAM Organic and famO to the Ministry of Justice to get a Registered Trademark. The registration process takes some time and we expect to get the result soon. The famO is the abbreviation of FAM Organic.

One of the action to implement Eat Local Indonesia initiative is to have ecofarming partnership with those who have the same vision on healthy environment and healthy people. The idea is to get closer the center of production to the center of consumers. In 2015, we officially open our first partnership at Tenjolaya Village – Mount Salak, Bogor District after completing the conversion stage. FAM Organic Tenjolaya will serve consumers in Bogor and Greater Jakarta.

How FAM Organic applies The Principles of Organic Agriculture

The Principles of Organic Agriculture are the roots from which Organic Agriculture grows and develops. This is not just about following organic standard. Deep inside, it is about the way of life, the philosophy of living on earth. How FAM Organic convert these principles into actions?

Organic Agriculture should sustain and enhance the health of soil, plant, animal, human and planet as one and indivisible. What we do:

  • Main focus is to keep the soil healthy instead of aiming the harvest yield. We believe when we do the processes right, everything else important will follow including good yield.
  • Rotation and companion are strictly applied. This is our common practice.
  • Pest trap application
  • Use only mature compost
  • Organic pesticides even allowed to use, is not a common practice. Organic pesticides are only used as a last resort. This can only be done when the above activities are implemented.

Organic Agriculture should be based on living ecological systems and cycles, work with them, emulate them and help sustain them. What we do:

  • About 30 varieties of crops and herbs are planted to make up good ecosystem started with healthy soil, to grow healthy crops, to attract living critters around the farm.
  • Make use spring water gravity force to water the crops avoiding the use of electric pump as much as possible.
  • Collect cow manure from neighborhood, avoiding carbon footprint of transportation
  • Open new farms at other area, closer to consumer center. Reducing the carbon footprint

Organic Agriculture should build on relationships that ensure fairness with regard to the common environment and life opportunities. What we do:

  • For consumers : apply the organic processes with trust and competency. Farm is open for visit.
  • For employees : improve the welfare by aiming minimum wage for every employee
  • For crops : set up a healthy soil environment to create healthy envionment
  • For pest : managing pest instead of destroying. Pest is part of ecosystem.
  • For soils : let the land suspended for a while from routines planting by planting very different type of crops.

Organic Agriculture should be managed in a precautionary and responsible manner to protect the health and well-being of current and future generations and the environment. What we do:

  • Always focus on maintaining the health of soil
  • Accept only proven technology or innovation for organic environment to ensure no negative impact on soil and environment in the long run.
